After decades of neglect and indifference, tango enjoyed a period of splendor.
During the last decades the youth approached the tango clearly influenced by Astor Piazzolla and of renewal. The debate between the tango was installed to tango dancing and listening, between playing the bandoneon standing or sitting, between informality and structure of old. And a whole generation post-piazzola presented proposals that followed the trends of the “master“.
Today we are facing a new stage where old discussions between the traditional and the cutting edge is silenced, the old and the new, and there is much new to say.
The range of options is very diverse. There is a whole generation of young dusting off old scores and rescuing the work of the Old Guard. And on the other side, the proposed electronic tango has primarily generated by Gotan Project‘s music reaches Buenos Aires unthinkable areas such as discos.
Perhaps most representative of what is happening today with the genre lies in two very different proposals for the same artist. Gustavo Santaolalla, the Argentine rock musician legendary former guitarist of Arco Iris, Current record producer, who revolutionized the world of tango with his BAJO FONDO TANGO CLUB, a proposed electronic tango that was an international success. The same Santoalalla edited “Coffee teachers“, a work of collection that brings together the greatest living masters of tango: Mariano Mores, Horacio Salgán, Leopoldo Federico, Alberto Podesta, Tear Rivers, among many others. That is, the two faces of tango today, equally valid and attractive.
There are many young people who are excellent tango musicians and bet a lot of quality proposals. One group proposed the rescue with guitars singing with Gardel corsinianas and reminiscences. This is the case of The Snares, Cardinal Dominguez, 34, Stabs (offering a repertoire of tangos prison that refer to the knife and its mythical universe), Walter and Dipi Kvitko Chino Laborde, Alfredo Piro, Brian Chambouleyron between other.
On the other hand there is a claim of the Typical Orchestra, the legendary tango training executed with excellence a tango to be danced. Among them include the orchestras The Boot, Vale Tango, Fernandez Fierro, Orquesta Sans Souci, and Rodolfo Mederos, who after experimenting with the new sound of tango, proposes a return to the origin.
As for the repertoire, there is a search of forgotten gems, old often never recorded tangos romantically speaking of Buenos Aires already was.
There are those tangos with current issues as the work of Javier González and young poets like Alexander Swarcman Patricia Barone and singing in their romantic themes and social criticism; the work of pianist José Ogivieki and a group of new songwriters like John Vattuone, and Adela Balbin, among others.
As for the instrumental tango, there is a whole generation proposing a new sound without losing the genuine tango, great young talents highly sought as directors and arrangers as Cristian Zárate (piano), César Angeleri (guitar), Paul Mainetti (bandoneon), Pablo Agri (violin), Julian Vat (flute and sax), Andres Linetzky (piano) and Nicolas Ledesma (piano), among the most prominent. They also leading his own groups.
They are very interesting also the new voices of gender as Esteban Riera, Cardinal Dominguez, Noelia Moncada, Veronika Silva (who was the voice of Gotan Project and now presents his repertoire of classic tangos), Roxana Fontan (who was the first Argentina singer sing in the Kremlin, with a unique and personal voice.
There is no shortage merger proposals, including “Colonized”, a fusion of tango and Cuban son, “Chicano” (proposing own tangos with musical influences), “Paul Porcelli Ensemble”, a proposal from jazz to tango stand Reincidentes and Small Orchestra, an urban proposal from rock to tango, and Juan Carlos Caceres (Argentine musician based in Paris) with its proposed “Black tango“, a fusion of tangos, milongas and cadombes in the rescue of black origin tango.
