Google Earth will take a picture of a giant poster of 3.5 kilometers in length that is being assembled with plastic bottles near the southern town of San Carlos de Bariloche, an initiative to encourage recycling and promote the winter in Patagonia, Argentina.
The poster, with the caption www.elijamospatagonia.com, was visited yesterday by the head of the NGO Network for Development, John Carr, in order that declared May 21 as National Recycling Day.
It also seeks to give a strong boost tourism in the Andean region, which was affected for nearly a year by the Chilean volcanic eruption cord Caulle Puyehue. The ash affected many tourist destinations including Bariloche and Villa La Angostura, who remained inactive in their winter high season.
“The goal is inaugurating the bill on June 21, when it launches the winter season, and Google has already made a commitment to photograph the poster to upload it to your virtual map,” the organizers told dpa.
The sign, located near the airport of the city, measured 3.5 kilometers long and will require about 750,000 plastic bottles, which were collected thanks to the contribution of the inhabitants of the city. “Once the sign, we want everyone to continue recycling and are doing now,” organizers said.
The project also has an environmental objective and work with the campaign of the NGO Forest Bank, which sells disposable bottles to buy Chaco forest in the jungle. So far, about 590 thousand bottles collected will be used to construct the required letters of 6 000 units each, and will be donated to the campaign.
“With the bottles collected in Patagonia in just two months and saved 7,900 trees, equivalent to two hectares,” Carr said during his visit to Bariloche, adding that the campaign “directly translates to work: every tourist brings to work and livelihoods of families across the region. ”
And overcome the problems that generated the ashes of the volcano began to erupt on June 4, 2011, the winter resorts of the Argentine Andes prepare to win back visitors.”The prospects are excellent. After spending what we went through, everything is good, “he said.
